SPIRITUAL MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

We Christians have two very important Feasts: Christmas and Easter. While celebrating Easter we celebrate the passion, death and resurrection of Our Lord, in Christmas we celebrate the Incarnation of Our Lord. The mystical events of both these Feasts lead us to understand the deep love God has for us. Let us reflect on the mystery of Incarnation.

We can understand the spiritual and mystical meaning of Christmas through the following Gospel verse, “For this is how God loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). This verse speaks of various eternal Truths of our religion. Let us meditate on them.

God and his Love:  God is Alpha and Omega, All-powerful, All-creator, Omniscient and Omnipresent, yet he is Love, Forgiveness and Mercy. God Out of love he created man. In Isaiah we read, “Can a woman forget her baby at the breast, feel no pity for the child she has borne? Even if these were to forget, I shall not forget you” (Is. 49:15). He further says, “ I have loved you with an everlasting love and so I will maintain my faithful love for you”(Jer 31:3). God is God yet he loves his sinful and rebellious creature.

Human Being: God created man in his own image and likeness (Gen.1:27). He gave man, his own creature, his own everlasting soul and life. He gave freedom and will power. He gave him wisdom and intellect and capacity to discern the good and evil. He gave him the Ten Commandments so that man may live accordingly and be united to God in this mundane life and after death. The Ten Commandments were a great sign of his love.

Sin and Salvation:  Man rebelled against his Creator. He disobeyed him. God could have destroyed man because he is just. He also is kind and merciful. He is love. But man’s sin was so grave that no sacrifice known to man could have appeased God. God in his wisdom and love offered his only begotten Son to be sacrificed. To save his slave he gave his only Son. It was necessary for the Son to sacrifice his life for our redemption. This is the great result of man’s sin and God’s immense love.

Jesus Christ, Son of God: St. John the Evangelist says, “In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him”(Jn 1:1-4). The Word is the second person of the Trinity. Like his Father the Word is Alpha and Omega, all-creator, all-powerful, omniscient and omnipotent yet he is love, forgiveness and mercy. He is for us “the Way, the Truth and the Life”. He is the High Priest, King-Shepherd and Prophet-Teacher. He is the Lamb of God and the promised Messiah. He has been named, “Wonder-Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace” (See Is.9:5). He loves human beings and is ready sacrifice his life for their redemption.

God Offered His Son to be Sacrificed: The mystery of God’s immense love is in this fact that He offered his only begotten Son to be sacrificed on the cross. The death punishment on the cross was the most ignominious death during the time of Jesus. The crucifixion was awarded only to the greatest of criminals. Carrying the heavy cross and going up to the top of the hillock, being crucified cruelly and hanging on the cross were both physically and psychologically painful. The pain and suffering Jesus went through are beyond our imagination. Jesus Christ offered himself to suffer pain, insult and abandonment and to die on the cross in our place for our sins. That is his love.

Incarnation: For the sacrifice he was going make he had to become a human being and that is why he was incarnated. This is our Christmas. “For on the Feast of this awe-filled mystery, though invisible in his own divine nature, he has appeared visibly in ours, and begotten before all ages, he has begun to exist in time; so that, raising up in himself all that was cast down, he might restore unity to all creation and call straying humanity back to the heavenly Kingdom” (Preface of Christmas, 1). Christmas contains the mystery of God’s immense love and the beginning of our redemption through Jesus Christ.

Mother Mary: Mary’s role is undisputable in the redemptive work of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The Angel Gabriel proclaims the unique grace and vocation Mary received from God. He says, “………Look! You are to conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High……The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow…”(See Lk 1: 28-35) Mary is co-redemptress. Elizabeth, her cousin, filled the Holy Spirit reveals the greatness of Mary by saying, “Of all women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Why should I be honored with a visit from the mother of my Lord?” (Lk 1:42-43).

My dear brothers and sisters, to get the eternal life we need to believe in the mystery of God’s immense love for us. We need also to believe in and love Jesus Christ, the Word Incarnate. I wish you grace-filled Happy Christmas in the name of the “Wonder Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father and Prince of Peace”.

Your servant and friend,
Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J.
