Vol. 46 No. 10            Private Circulation Only                  October– 2016

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque & the Devotion to Sacred Heart of Jesus

St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a  Religious of the Visitation Order and an apostle of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was born at Lhautecour, France, 22 July, 1647.

Her parents, Claude Alacoque and Philiberte Lamyn, were distinguished less for temporal possessions than for their virtue, which gave them an honourable position. From early childhood Margaret showed intense love for the Blessed Sacrament, and preferred silence and prayer to childish amusements. After her first communion at the age of nine, she practised in secret severe corporal mortifications, until paralysis confined her to bed for four years. At the end of this period, having made a vow to the Blessed Virgin to consecrate herself to religious life, she was instantly restored to perfect health. The death of her father and the injustice of a relative plunged the family in poverty and humiliation, after which more than ever Margaret found consolation in the Blessed Sacrament, and Christ made her sensible of His presence and protection. He usually appeared to her as the Crucified or the Ecce Homo, and this did not surprise her, as she thought others had the same Divine assistance. When Margaret was seventeen, the family property was recovered, and her mother besought her to establish herself in the world. Her filial tenderness made her believe that the vow of childhood was not binding, and that she could serve God at home by penance and charity to the poor. Then, still bleeding from her self-imposed austerities, she began to take part in the pleasures of the world. One night upon her return from a ball, she had a vision of Christ as He was during the scourging, reproaching her for infidelity after He had given her so many proofs of His love. During her entire life Margaret mourned over two faults committed at this time--the wearing of some superfluous ornaments and a mask at the carnival to please her brothers.

On 25 May, 1671, she entered the Visitation Convent at Paray, where she was subjected to many trials to prove her vocation, and in November, 1672, pronounced her final vows. She had a delicate constitution, but was gifted with intelligence and good judgement, and in the cloister she chose for herself what was most repugnant to her nature, making her life one of inconceivable sufferings, which were often relieved or instantly cured by our Lord, Who acted as her Director, appeared to her frequently and conversed with her, confiding to her the mission to establish the devotion to His Sacred Heart. These extraordinary occurrences drew upon her the adverse criticism of the community, who treated her as a visionary, and her superior commanded her to live the common life. But her obedience, her humility, and invariable charity towards those who persecuted her, finally prevailed, and her mission, accomplished in the crucible of suffering, was recognized even by those who had shown her the most bitter opposition.

Margaret Mary was inspired by Christ to establish the Holy Hour and to pray lying prostrate with her face to the ground from eleven till midnight on the eve of the first Friday of each month, to share in the mortal sadness He endured when abandoned by His Apostlesin His Agony, and to receive Holy Communion on the first Friday of every month. In the first great revelation, He made known to her His ardent desire to be loved by men and His design of manifesting His Heart with all Its treasures of love and mercy, of sanctification and salvation. He appointed the Friday after the octave of the feast of Corpus Christi as the feast of the Sacred Heart; He called her "the Beloved Disciple of the Sacred Heart", and the heiress of all Its treasures. The love of the Sacred Heart was the fire which consumed her, and devotion to the Sacred Heart is the refrain of all her writings. In her last illness she refused all alleviation, repeating frequently: "What have I in heaven and what do I desire on earth, but Thee alone, O my God", and died on 17 October, 1690, pronouncing the Holy Name of Jesus.

The discussion of the mission and virtues of Margaret Mary continued for years. All her actions, her revelations, her spiritual maxims, her teachings regarding the devotion to the Sacred Heart, of which she was the chief exponent as well as the apostle, were subjected to the most severe and minute examination, and finally the Sacred Congregation of rites passed a favourable vote on the heroic virtues of this servant of God. In March, 1824, Leo XII pronounced her Venerable, and on 18 September, 1864, Pius IX declared her Blessed. When her tomb was canonically opened in July, 1830, two instantaneous cures took place. St. Margaret Mary was canonized by Benedict XV in 1920. Her body rests under the altar in the chapel at Paray, and many striking favours have been obtained by pilgrims attracted thither from all parts of the world. Her feast is celebrated on 16 October.

Inter-Faith Tribute to St. Teresa of Kolkata, Little Flower School Auditorium, Telco

"Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me.  When I was hungry, you gave me to eat; when I was thirsty you gave me to drink and naked you clothed me" – Jesus Christ

Mother Teresa helped these words become reality in the lives of the unfortunate, the leper, the AIDS patient, the deprived. A generous dispenser of divine mercy, she made herself available to everyone through her defense of human life, those unborn and abandoned and discarded.  She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God given dignity.

Mother Teresa said "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."

Therefore, it was only fitting that we pay tribute to this legend of love and angel of peace, a true Indian citizen, belonging to the world.  The Parish Priest of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Telco, organized an Inter Faith Tribute to St. Mother Teresa of Kolkata on 17th September 2017.

Mr. S. B. Borwankar, Executive Director (Quality), Tata Motors Ltd., Pune, was the Chief Guest, and Rt. Rev. Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J., D.D., and Mr. A. B.Lall, Head (Jamshedpur Plant), Tata Motors Ltd., were the Guests of Honour.  Mr. Krishna Kumar, Head (HR), Tata Cummins, Mr. Harpal Singh (Sikh representative), Md. Riyazuddin (Muslim representative), and Fr. C. R. Prabhu, S.J., Director, Catholic Charities, were special guests at the event which was held in the Auditorium of Little Flower School.  It was heartening to see people from the neighborhood gather to celebrate the life of Mother Teresa, the living saint, who personally touched the lives of many in Jamshedpur too.  The packed auditorium spoke volumes of the peoples’ love and respect for this magnificent personality. The representatives of different religions shared their experience of meeting Mother Teresa and the wonder of her work among the poorest of the poor.  The students of Little Flower School, student nurses of Jeevan Jyothi School of Nursing, and teachers of S. K. Public School, Telco, put up performances in honour of this legendary saint who we had the privilege of meeting in our lifetime.

Thousands of words have been spoken about Mother Teresa, what she has done for the downtrodden and the unfortunate, and her unconditional love.  As Dylan Thomas once said that love is gratitude with a memory, to Mother Teresa we can simply say, "thank you for the memories". (Sr. Hilda SJC)

The Feast of St. Vincent De Paul, Gyandeep, Birsanagar

The Feast of St. Vincent De Paul Patron St. of Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Birsanagar, Jamshedpur was celebrated on 25th of September 2016, at 7 A.M. in Gyandeep Mass Center. Rev. Fr. Camillee Hembrom, Parish Priest, presided over the Holy Eucharistic celebration. He said – “to the troubled and abandoned like sheep without a shepherd, like that of master, his heart was also moved with pity for all the troubled and abandoned of his time which included not only the rural poor but the poor in the cities as well as convicts and slaves.”

God takes the side of the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized through the works of mercy. The saints- like Vincent De Paul as well, show us that we too can and must take their side. Fr. Camille said, that in the same way the SCNS shared and carried out the same work in Jamshedpur diocese and all over the world. He also said – that they are grateful to the SCNS who have brought positive changes in the lives of the people of Birsanagar and wherever the Sisters go. They are still reaching out to the poor and the needy. During the mass the 7 Sisters renewed their vows. Fr. Camillee Hembrom thanked the Sisters for their important role, which they play in the Parish. They had small programme to felicitate them and a fellowship meal with the parishioners. Really it added doubled the joy (Sr. Maxima SCNS)

St. Joseph’s School, Golmuri

It has been an action filled month for the children of St. Joseph’s School, Golmuri. They had various programmes and courses in this month. Fr. Jilson T.L.  conducted a seminar on ‘faith formation’ for all the Christian children of the school on 13th Sept. It was an enriching experience for them. It was a double joy for participants as they actively involved in queries and responses and in games and skits along with his inspiring talk.

Three of our Std. 7th students received a ‘Jyoti Fellowship’ scholarship by Tata Steel Rural Development of Rs. 3,750-/- each, a bag and an emergency light. They will continue to get this scholarship till their +2 as they were qualified for the entrance test.

Sarva Dharm Sabha, Dhanbd
All roads led to St. Anthony’s Church, Dhanbad, on Sunday, September, 11 when a ‘fist of its kind’   Sarva Dharm Sabha, in all religion meet, organized in honour of Mother Teresa’s canonization, drew a conglomeration of people in the parish hall.  Sri. Raj Sinha, M L A, Dhanbad, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He along with seven other speakers lit the lamp and thus the programme kicked off.

It his speech, the Chief Guest said, Mother Teresa, though a Christian, belonged to the whole humanity. Her selfless service to the poorest of the poor cut across all barriers of caste, creed and religion. It was in India, he said, Mother showed the whole world, through her life of compassionate love, that in the service of the lowest there is beauty beyond ugliness, wisdom beyond foolishness and dignity beyond brokenness. He said, we all cannot become Mother Teresa, but can certainly, through our genuine and concerted service, help alleviate the pain of the poor.

The seven speakers drawn from Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Jain Communities, including one representing the RSS and another the Brama Samaj, held the audience spell bound as they belted out their glowing tribute to Mother Teresa and her works and extolled her elevation to the status of a saint as absolutely befitting.

The programme, high on excitement, was interspersed with five dances and a song. While De Nobili School, CMRI, girls’ prayer dance sparked grace and elegance, the mellifluous song sung by the parish youth kept the audience foot- tapping. But the Govindpur Nirmala School girls were at their best, they not only regaled the audience with four enthralling thematic dances but also touched a chord with everyone drawing thunderous applause.

The vote of thanks was followed by the singing of the National Anthem and thus was the programme appropriately wrapped off on a high note. Overheard from the dispersing crowed “good programme.” (Fr. Ammatus Kujur)

Vatican raises hope for Tribal Nun -  Mother Mary Bernadette, DSA to Sainthood

Mother Mary Bernadette Prasad Kispotta, founder of the Congregation of ‘The Daughters of St Anne, Ranchi’, became the first tribal woman to be declared Servant of God on 7th August, 2016, paving the way to start the lengthy process for a possible sainthood.

After the Vatican in July issued a nihil obstat or 'nothing stands in the way' certificate for a thorough probe into the life of Mother Mary Bernadette, a decree issued by Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo, named her a Servant of God. "It is a rare honour for a tribal woman to be declared a Servant of God. Today, she became the first tribal nun in India to start her journey towards a possible sainthood. It is all God's mercy," Cardinal Toppo stated on the day of naming her a ‘Servant of God’.

Born on June 16,1878, Mother Mary Bernadette Prasad Kispotta, along with three other Sisters - Cecilia, Veronica and Mary - founded the Congregation of the Daughters of St Anne on July 26, 1897. All her life as a nun, Mother Mary Bernadette worked extensively for education and travelled across forested hinterland without roads to reach and teach villagers. During the turn of the 20th century and the early decades, when cholera struck large parts of Chhotanagpur, Sister Mary and Sister Veronica died in the epidemic. Undeterred by tragedies and dangers, Mother Mary Bernadette and her congregation went on with their work in the region and started branching out across India.

On April 16,1961, Mother Mary Bernadette breathed her last at St Anne's Convent, Ranchi, from TB.
Mother Mary Bernadette's bravery came from her unshakable faith in Jesus. The Mother and Sisters of the congregation defied all odds to spread faith and education in the region. They are heroines of the Catholic church. Sister Linda Mary Vaughan, Superior General, Daughters of St Anne, said they had moved a formal petition last November to Cardinal Toppo for the initiation of the process to declare their founder Mother Mary Bernadette a Saint.

Beginning from four in 1897, today the Congregation of the Daughters of St Anne has 1,040 sisters spread over 142 convents in India and abroad. While declaring Mother Mary Bernadette a ‘Servant of God’, Cardinal's Cardinal Telesphore P. Toppo asked the faithful and people at large to submit documents, photographs and other material evidence relating to Mother Mary Bernadette that they may possess, to the church, which a tribunal to be formed by him would examine and send its report to the Vatican.

Giving details of the rigorous process, Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas, auxiliary to Cardinal Toppo and secretary-general of Catholic Bishops Conference of India, the highest policy making body of the Roman Catholic Church in India, stated after the Cardinal received the petition, he formed a committee to go into the merits of the case.

"All 9 Bishops of Jharkhand and the Andamans, two auxiliary Bishops to Cardinal Toppo and one Bishop Emeritus were consulted in the process of declaring Mother Mary Bernadette a ‘Servant of God’. All available documents and photographs, including a memoir written by Mother Mary Bernadette, were examined. It was unanimously concluded that Mother had led a holy life and that a recommendation should be sent to the Vatican for the Congregation for the Causes of Saints of the Holy See. The Vatican concurred Mother Mary Bernadette led a heroically virtuous life and issued the nihil obstat in July. On August 7, 2016 the Cardinal issued a decree naming the Mother a Servant of God,"

Once the tribunal sends its report to the Vatican, another long step-by-step process of screening for canonisation will start, criteria for which includes two posthumous miracles.
It is a matter of great joy for us to have someone from among us to be elevated to the status of ‘Servant of God’. And it indeed is our responsibility to pray for the faster process of her canonisation.

Monthly Recollection: And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” Mk 6:31. It was the good opportunity for the regents to take break from their busy schedule to attend in the monthly recollection. 7 regents from the different parishes of our diocese came for the monthly recollection which was arranged at Catholic Charities from 20th evening to 21st afternoon. Fr. Prabhu the resource person was more than happy to see all the seven regents of the diocese as he found them energetic and full of life. Prabhu very much and went back to their respective parishes refreshed. A big thanks to Fr. Prabhu and Catholic Charities family for organizing it.

Gaun Gan Raj Majhi Pargana Sammelan: Due to lack of knowledge about the rights and entitlements, a person or a community can be oppressed and suppressed by the others. The tribals have been victims of this kind since a long time. They have so many rights but they do not know and understand them. As a result, they are not able to make use of them. Keeping this idea and thought in mind the local tribals who belong to the Gaun Gan Raj Parishad had organized one-day seminar at Catholic Charities on 20th of August.  They also had intense discussion about Gramsabha as it is not functioning well in many villages and it has control of Political leaders. Mr. K.C. Mardi the local leader and well-wisher of the tribals from Karandih was the resource person and organizer. He, in his speech, emphasized the need of knowing the rights and entitlements and the importance of Gramsabha.

St. Mary’s English School, Bistupur

The Inauguration of the Multipurpose Building: The inauguration of the multipurpose building of St. Mary’s English High School, finally culminated in the hands of Mr. T.V. Narendran, MD, Tata Steel Ltd., and his Lordship, Honorable Bishop Felix Toppo. The Chief Guest of the evening, Mr. T.V. Narendran, addressed the gathering by mentioning the achievements of St. Mary’s English High School and its illustrious past. He reminded the audience that St. Mary’s is one of the oldest schools in the city and has striven hard to secure this position. This multipurpose building is a wonderful achievement along this path. This building will pave the way for opportunities to students for self-expression and thus character formation. I hope that every school and its students can avail of the chance for making use of this auditorium.

Honorable Rev. Bishop, Felix Toppo, as the guest of honor, honoured us by blessing the multipurpose building with a Bible reading in the background. In his message, his Lordship said that the multipurpose building is a feather in the cap of St. Mary’s English High School, and a new chapter in the history of the institution. It is a matter of pride and definitely an achievement that the inconspicuous and humble beginnings of the school at Bengal Club premises would culminate into such a prestigious institution with an excellent infrastructure. He said that we owe our obligation to Tata Steel, Jusco, parents and well-wishers who have played a dominant role in fulfilling our dream. We nurture the hope that your love and cooperation will always be with us.

The dream of the multipurpose building/auditorium was envisioned by Ex. Principal, Late Fr. Gerald Martin D’Souza and Principal Fr. David Vincent played an important role to accomplish the task. It is the result of Fr. David’s untiring endeavor that we are proud to possess this magnificent building.
Ex Principal, Fr. David Vincent and Principal Fr. Puthumairaj have expressed their obligation for everyone’s cooperation. Together with a colorful cultural programme the history of the school was also exhibited through an audio visual display. Felicity an inter school competition is a much awaited event every year. It was held on 6th of August. Our chief guest for the occasion was Fr. C. R. Prabhu.in his speech he mentioned that Felicity is a good platform for the children to be recognized and show their inner talents, participation is more important than winning. The teachers along with the help of the co-coordinator planned every detail with precision and organized a plethora of events for the students from various schools of the city. Several competitions pertaining to analytical skills, writing skills and entertainment were organized. It was heartening to see the team spirit, unity, innovation, enthusiasm and high energy levels that prevailed on the campus. As expected all their hard work paid rich dividends and Felicity was a grand success. Congrats to all! On August 15th St. Mary’s English school paid a glorious tribute to India’s martyrs and freedom fighters through dance and music invoking a feeling of pride and patriotism for our country.

Monica Day at St. Paul’s Church, Maluka

The Feast of St. Monica as the Mother's Day was celebrated with religious gaiety and grandeur on 27 and 28 of August. On Saturday, 27th August, Fr. Michael Deogam, the resource person gave the mothers a spiritual input citing the life and example of St. Monica and he culminated the day with Adoration and confession. There were about 67 women who participated in it. The following day the mothers each holding a candle were led to the altar by a beautiful dance by the children for a solemn Mass in which there were special prayers for them and their families. Later, there was a talk on health awareness by Sr. Rajana followed by various games conducted by the Bethany Sisters and a singing competition. Fr. Michael in his final note exhorted the mothers to imitate St. Monica and become a model of faith for their families. The program concluded with an agape. The day was doubly blessed with the visit of FRS. Henry, Pradeep and Rafael who came as magi with gifts for the children and sponsored them a meal. A sincere thanks to Fr. Manoj, Sisters and all those who made the day for our mothers. (Fr. Dileep Marandi)

St. Joseph’s Cathedral Parish, Golmuri
The sad demise of Mr. Henry Sarkey :  It was an inconsolable day for the staff of St. Joseph’s welfare centre to know that Mr. Henry Sarkey left us for his heavenly reward on 7th of August, 2016. He joined the center in 1972 and worked as the office administrator for forty-four years. We are deeply indebted to him for his tremendous service to the Church and center. He was a well-known figure in the Church. He was very gentle and had a dynamic personality. A huge number of people were present at the Cathedral Church to pray for him and to show their solidarity with the family members on his funeral. Fr. David Vincent celebrated Holy Eucharist and prayed for him. Fr. Prabhu preached. Later a requiem mass was held on 27th of August by His Grace Most Rev. Felix Toppo condoled with the family members and assured of his prayer. We pray for the departed soul of Mr. Henry Sarkey. May God grand him eternal rest!
