NOAMUNDI: ST. MARY’S CHURCH

The declaration of St. Mary’s quasi parish, Noamundi into a full fledged parish byBishop Felix Toppo, S.J. is the ample proof that the Church in the diocese of Jamshedpur is growing faith and number. This great event took place during the Holy Mass on 7^th April, 2013 in the presence of Fr. Jerome TOR, Provincial Superior of the Congregation and the faithful of Noamundi.

Fr. Prabhu, V.G. of Jamshedpur diocese, along with some priests and parishioners from neighboring parishes also witnessed this event. To add colour to the day there were cultural programmes. On this occasion the newly elected members of catholic sabha and mahila sangh were introduced. At the end of the programme all present shared a delicious meal. Congratulation to Fr. Abhay Tigga, the first parish priest and the First parishioners of Noamundi!

SENATE OF PRIESTS’ MEETING

The new members of the Senate of Priests had a meeting on 09^th April, 2013 at Bishop’s House, Golmuri. The meeting began at 9.30 a.m., with a short prayer. The meeting was chaired by Most Rev. Felix Toppo, SJ. The participants actively participated in the discussions and deliberations about the various issues for the development of the Diocese. The meeting came to an end at about 12.30 p.m. with a short prayer.

ROBBERY IN PDDM PRARTHANALAYA, BARIDIH

On 10^th April, 2013 some thieves broke opened the back door of PDDM Convent at Baridih. It was a shocking incident for PDDM Sisters as they found their house back door broke opened. To their good luck the thieves did not carry the things of the house but took away some amount of money that they found. Hearing the news Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J., Fr. C.R. Prabhu and Eugene Ekka rushed to the spot to help the Sisters.

Sr. Rita, PDDM the Superior of the house gave the First Report of the incident to the Sidgora police station asking the police to consider the seriousness of the incident and give protection to the Sisters. Police are investigating.

ST. MARY'S ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL

The months of March-April was a very hectic time for the School with Board Exams, Admission, and Interviews etc. Inspite of all these Fr. David the Principal of the school had enough time to meet the parents, teachers and the students of the school. The new academic year, began on 25^th March. On 5^th April, professor Mrs. Monica Uppal from Loyola B.ed college, Telco addressed the guardians parents of Std IX students and gave a lot of inputs with regard to career guidance. 10^th April New session started for L.K.G, STD X & XI. The students are excited to come to the school.

On 13th April was the another memorable day for St. Mary’s school family as the long awaited dream was fulfilled when M.K Nerurkar M.D Tata steel laid the foundation stone for the multipurpose hall. Thanks to Fr. David, the principal of the school for his tireless effort and hard work to fulfill this dream into reality.

PRATIKSHA, SUNDERNAGAR

Having experienced the goodness and love of the Lord throughout this academic year, Regional Propaedeutic Seminary Pratiksha celebrated its graduation day on 10^th April, 2013. On this auspicious occasion many priests and Sisters of the town joined them in thanking and praising the Lord at Eucharistic celebration which was presided over by Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J. the Patron of Propaedeutic Seminary. Prayers were offered very specially for all the seminarians who spent a year discerning their vocations through vigorous training. Congratulation to Frs. Oscar Beck, Casmir Vas and All the best to Brothers!

CONGRATULATION FRS. SAMEER AND NESTOR

Diocese of Jamshedpur is blessed with 2 more Priests, Frs. Sameer Soreng and Nestor Soreng who were Ordained to the Sacred Order of Priesthood on the 14^th April, 2013 at Samtoli Cathedral by Most Rev. Vincent Barwa,  Bishop of Simdega.

Fr. C.R.Prabhu, Vicar General represented the diocese of Jamshedpur along with 18 priests, Sisters and many faithful from the diocese.  The ordination ceremony began at 06:30 am. colored with traditional tribal dances and singing. We thank God for these new Priests and congratulate them whole heartedly!

ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH, DHANBAD

14^th April, 2013 was a memorable day for 103 boys and girls of St. Anothony’s Church, Dhanbad who received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Along with Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J. Fr. Amatus Kujur, the parish priest, Frs. Norbert Kindo and Fr. James Surin were present at the Altar. The Solemn Mass began at 7:00 am with beautiful entrance dance by Mahila Sangh. The Church was filled with the faithful.

After the Mass the parishioners welcomed and thanked the bishop by giving a bouquet of flowers and a shawl. The Confirmation certificate was given to all the boys and girls who received the Sacrament. At the end of the programme all shared the snacks and tea. Congratulation to Fr. Amatus Kujur, the parish priest and dean of Dhanbad deanery!

ST. BARBARA CHURCH,  MOSABONI: BLESSING AND DEDICATION

The long awaited dream of the faithful of Mosaboni was realized when the newly built Church was inaugurated by Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J. on 20^th April, 2013. It is dedicated to “St. Barbara”. The faithful gave the bishop a traditional welcome by receiving him at the main entrance. Then the bishop was led to the newly built Church by the faithful. The inaugural ceremonies began at 09:30 am by Mangala Aarati followed by cutting the ribbon at the entrance door and blessing of the Church by Bishop Felix in the presence of  a big number of faithful and 25 priests. The liturgy was devotional with beautiful singing.

A short entertainment programme after the inaugural Mass cheered all who came. It was also an occasion to honour the former parish priests who initiated the work of building the Church. At the end of the programme all shared a delicious meal prepared by the faithful of Mosaboni. Congratulations to Fr. A. Alphonse and parishioners of Mosaboni!

GOLMURI: ST. JOSEPH’S CATHEDRAL

On 21^st April, 2013, St. Joseph’s Cathedral was filled with joy and happiness as 95 boys and girls received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J was the main celebrant. A large number of faithful participated in the Mass to pray and to wish their children the very best in their faith journey. Congratulations to Fr. Camille Hembrom and his parish team! 

MERCY CONVENT (SCJM): HOUSE FEAST

The Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary (SCJM), Baridih celebrated their House Feast on 21^st April, 2013, thanking the Lord, the Good Shepherd at the Eucharistic Celebration. Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J. was the main celebrant. Fr. C.R.Prabhu, V.G., congratulating and thanking the Sisters said in his homily that through our baptism all of us are to share the work of Good Shepherd in the community. The feasting reached to its climax by sharing the family meal.

EASTER PEACE RALLY

On the 01^st April, 2013, Jamshedpur city witnessed a Easter Peace Rally, which was organized under the banner of Christians of Jamshedpur. Through this rally the Christians of Jamshedpur tried to communicate to the people about the Peace and joy that the Risen Lord offers. Most Rev. Felix Toppo, SJ and pastors from other denominations addressed the people gathered for the rally at Loyola School ground and communicated the Message of Peace which Easter offers.

KUMARDUBI:LOYOLA SCHOOL, TALDANGA PREPARED FOR THE WORLD

23rd March, 2013 marked the Graduation Ceremony for the ISC 2013 batch. It was a day filled with joy. The outgoing students for the last time sang the School Song and lit their candles from the flame held by their respective class teachers. We believe that this flame will illuminate their lives always.

The Chief Guest for the evening was Rev.Fr.George Fernandez, Director – De Nobili Schools.

The Chief Guest gave a very inspiring message. He said, “Make your GOAL to transform the World, but first transform yourself.” This is true Education. Fr. Edward, our Principal quoted Shiv Khera- “I don’t want your Honours, I want Honour.” His message to the Graduates was ‘Live with Honour and Success will come to you.’ All the students of the out-going batch were given a token in remembrance of their school life.  The toppers of the Science and Commerce sections were awarded Certificates for Academic Excellence. The students with 100% attendance were also awarded.

Parents, Guests, teachers, students had refreshment and spent some time together. Finally it was time to bid adieu. (Rita Sen)

ST. XAVIER’S ENGLISH SCHOOL, CHAIBASA

The school remained closed from 27^th March till 1^st April on account of Holi and the Holy Week.

On 3^rd April, we had ‘left and Right Handwriting’ competitions for classes I to X. It is a very effective exercise to trigger both parts of our brain. It is fun to do and it has far -reaching consequences as a child can perform more efficiently with both sides of his brain activated.

There was an orientation program for the teachers on 5^th and 6^th April. Our resource person was Fr. Ajit Xess, the Principal of St. Xavier’s School, Doranda. He spoke about how a happy teacher can influence the life of a child. He also spoke on various topics, i.e. positive climate in the classroom, all round development of an individual, etc.

Classes for LKG started on 8^th April. It was a joy to see them entering the school for the first time, which is a door to the world of infinite knowledge.

Parents’ – Teachers’ Meet started on 8^th April and continued till 12^th April. Different classes had their Parents’- Teachers’ Meet on different days. Various points related to syllabus were discussed. Parents were given information about the new marking-scheme, dance & music classes, karate classes etc.  

The school mourns the loss of one of our most esteemed benefactors Late Ashok Kumar Jain, whose untimely demise on 12^th April is a severe blow to the whole mankind. Special prayer was conducted on 13^th April for his eternal repose.

Remedial classes for the weak students started on 15^th April. We have some very talented students who are very dextrous in playing with words. To allow them to show their linguistic skills, we had a story writing competition on 17^th April for the students of std VI to VIII. It was compulsory for everyone to participate and the students’ response was very good.

CARDINAL BERGOGLIO ELECTED TO PONTIFICATE

Vatican City, 13 March 2013 - Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., was elected as Supreme Pontiff, the 265th successor of Peter, and has chosen the name Francis. The Cardinal proto-deacon Jean-Louis Tauran made the solemn announcement to the people at 8:12 p.m. from the external Loggia of the Hall of Blessings of the Vatican Basilica following the white “smoke” which occurred at 7:06pm. Following are the words pronounced by Cardinal Tauran: I announce to you with great joy; We have a Pope; The most eminent and most reverend Lord, Lord Mario Cardinal of Holy Roman Church Bergoglio Who has taken the name Francis.

Conclave Notes: The conclave that led to the election of Pope Francis began on Tuesday, 12 March 2013 in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican Apostolic Palace, with the "Extra omnes" (all others out) pronounced at 5:33pm by Msgr. Guido Marini, master of the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff, following the taking of the oath by the 115 cardinal electors.

The first black “fumata” (smoke)  took place at 7:42 pm the same day.

On Wednesday, 13 March, there was black smoke at 11:40am.

On Wednesday, 13 March, there was white smoke at 7:06pm.

First “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) Blessing of the New Holy Father Francis.

Before the new Pope appeared at the balcony, an honour guard of Swiss Guards in full military regalia and bearing the pontifical standard marched into the square and took their places under the Loggia followed by a representation of the various Italian armed forces that, since 1929, have paid homage to the Pope on important occasions as a sign of the reconciliation between the Holy See and the Italian State. The Holy See marching band accompanied the wait. As soon as they heard the name of the new pontiff, the crowd began to chant together: “Francesco, Francesco”.

At 8:24pm, the Holy Father Francis, preceded by the Cross, appeared at the Loggia of the brightly lit Vatican Basilica. Before imparting the “Urbi et Orbi” (“to the city and the world) apostolic blessing he greeted the enormous crowd that had been gathering all afternoon in cold and rainy St. Peter's Square saying: “Dear brothers and sisters, Good evening. You know that the duty of the Conclave was to give Rome a bishop. It seems that my brother cardinals picked him from almost the ends of the earth. But here we are! I thank you for the warm welcome. The diocesan community of Rome has its bishop. Thank you! First and foremost I would like to say a prayer for our Bishop Emeritus Benedict XVI. Let us pray together for him, that the Lord bless him and the Virgin keep him.”

After leading the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Gloria, Pope Francis again addressed the crowd saying: “And now let us begin this journey, bishop and people, this journey of the Church of Rome, which is the one that leads all the churches in charity. A journey of fraternity, of trust between us. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the world so that this might be a great brotherhood. I hope that this journey of the Church that we begin today, and in which my Cardinal Vicar here present will assist me, will be fruitful for the evangelization of this beautiful city”.

“Now I would like to impart the blessing, but first, first I ask a favor of you. Before the bishop blesses the people, I ask that you pray to the Lord that He bless me: the prayer of the people asking a blessing for their bishop. Let us pray in silence, this your prayer for me.”

“Now I will impart the blessing to you and all the world, to all men and women of good will.”

After imparting the apostolic blessing Pope Francis added: “Brothers and sisters, I take my leave. Thank you for your warm welcome. Tomorrow I'm going to pray to the Virgin, that she will safeguard all of Rome. Good night and rest well.”

WHO IS JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO?

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, S.J., Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ordinary for Eastern-rite faithful in Argentina who lack an Ordinary of their own rite, was born on 17 December 1936 in Buenos Aires. He studied as and holds a degree as a chemical technician, but then chose the priesthood and entered the seminary of Villa Devoto. On 11 March 1958 he moved to the novitiate of the Company of Jesus where he finished studies in the humanities in Chile. In 1963, on returning to Buenos Aires, he obtained a degree in philosophy at the St. Joseph major seminary of San Miguel.

Between 1964 and 1965 he taught literature and psychology at the Immacolata College in Santa Fe and then in 1966 he taught the same subjects at the University of El Salvador, in Buenos Aires.

From 1967 to 1970 he studied theology at the St. Joseph major seminary of San Miguel where he obtained a degree. On 13 December 1969 he was ordained a priest. From 1970 to 1971 he completed the third probation at Alcala de Henares, Spain, and on 22 April 1973, pronounced his perpetual vows.

He was novice master at Villa Varilari in San Miguel from 1972 to 1973, where he also taught theology. On 31 July 1973 he was elected as Provincial for Argentina, a role he served as for six years.

From 1980 to 1986 he was rector of the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel as well as pastor of the Patriarca San Jose parish in the Diocese of San Miguel. In March of 1986 he went to Germany to finish his doctoral thesis. The superiors then sent him to the University of El Salvador and then to Cordoba where he served as a confessor and spiritual director.

On 20 May 1992, John Paul II appointed him titular Bishop of Auca and Auxiliary of Buenos Aires, He received Episcopal consecration in the Cathedral of Buenos Aires from Cardinal Antonio Quarracino, Apostolic Nunzio Ubaldo Calabresi, and Bishop Emilio Ognenovich. of Mercedes-Lujan on 27 June of that year.

On 3 June 1997 he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires and succeeded Cardinal Antonio Quarracino on 28 February 1998.

He was Adjunct Relator General of the 10th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, October 2001.

He served as President of the Bishops' Conference of Argentina from 8 November 2005 until 8 November 2011.

He was created and proclaimed Cardinal by Blessed John Paul II in the consistory of 21 February 2001, of the Title of S. Roberto Bellarmino (St. Robert Bellarmine).

He was a member of The Congregations for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments; for the Clergy; and for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life; the Pontifical Council for the Family; and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

NEWS FROM DIOCESE 

DEEPANJALI CONVENT, SIADIH:

To give better accommodation to the village children studying in Vidya Jyoti School, Siadih Deepanjali convent has succeeded to build a girls’ hostel in the campus. It was inaugurated and blessed on 28^th of February, 2013 by Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J. in the presence of Rev. Srs. Sarita, F.C and Rosalia Kullu, FC the provincial’s counselors and Hostel children. The joy of this achievement was celebrated with a short entertainment programme which was enjoyed by all. Congratulation to FC sisters at Deepanjali Convent, Siadih!

DIVINE RETREAT CENTRE, SUNDERNAGAR:

In view of the joyful celebration of Easter, spiritual renewal retreats for the people were conducted by Fr. Sebastian, VC and team in different parishes during the Lenten season.

BISHOP’S HOUSE GOLMURI

Diocesan Clergy Golmuri: Diocesan Clergy Meeting was held on 1^st March, 2013. Thirty five priests in spite of their busy schedule attended the Diocesan Clergy Meeting and discussed on various issues concerned. All the participants with great enthusiasm participated and drew up some suggestions, especially in connection with celebration of the Year of Faith.

Junior Priests Gathering: On the 20th March, 2013, the junior priests of the diocese came together for a day of prayer and reflection together at Bishop’s House, Golmuri. Bishop Felix Toppo, SJ and Fr. C.R. Prabhu, listened to the junior priests and guided them with their valuable suggestions. The meeting concluded with the Eucharistic celebration. At the end of the day all the junior priest had a basketball match and enjoyed the day together. The participants benefited from the one day programme.

Chrism Mass: The strength of Presbyterium in the diocese was strongly felt on 21^st March, 2013 as a large number of priests both diocesan and religious came together to spend a day of sharing and recollection. Rev. Fr. Michael Thanaraj, S.J. the Jamshedpur Jesuit Provincial guided the priests and religious in meditation and prepared them for the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation. The solemn Chrism mass was celebrated at 05:30pm at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Golmuri.

It was also an occasion to thank the Lord for our Jubilarians Fr. Leo John D’Souza, Fr. Augustine Kullu, Fr. Gyan Prakash Topno, Fr. Cyril Fernandes, Fr. Oskar Horo, S.J., Fr. Gilbert Menezes, S.J., Raphael Lakra, S.J. At the end of the Mass the whole congregation thanked them for their dedicated services and felicitated them with bouquets, shawls and mementos.

LOYOLA SCHOOL,TALDANGA: ENABLE, EMPOWER, ENERGIZE

The session 2012 – 2013 came to a fantastic end with the distribution of report cards on 28^th Feb. More than 95% parents came to collect their wards’ results.

The new session began with the Orientation  for Teachers on the 6^th of March. Brother Tony was invited to address the teachers. He spoke on realization of oneself to understand others.

All the Christian students of the junior section who had passed in all subjects in their annual exam were given a dictionary & Rs. 500/- and the seniors received a dictionary & Rs.1000/-. as motivation  towards excelling in their academics.

The 15^th & 16^th of March have been very enriching for Loyola Teachers. Mrs. Salony Priya Counseling Psychologist from Kolkata was invited to conduct a two – day seminar. The Seminar topic was RECHARGE & REVIVE. Adolescence Issues, Learning Centric education, Positive Attitude, Discipline by design, Positive Classroom management, Teaching to make students successful, were a few topics discussed. So we all thank our Principal Fr. Edward Saldanha for such a foresight and allowing the teachers to connect with Umeed. (Rita Sen)

ST. XAVIER’S ENGLISH SCHOOL, CHAIBASA

Results for the Annual Exams, 2013-14, were distributed on 7th of March. Overall result of the whole school was quite good as maximum students had scored better percentages and a marked improvement was seen in every class.

New session 2013-14 began on 11th of March. The day started with a small prayer of thanksgiving for the fruitful outcome of the previous year and we prayed to God for his divine guidance throughout the course of this present year.

This year class mentors and subject incharges are introduced in our school for the first time. The work and the responsibilities are decentralised for a smoother and a better functioning of school. The classes are going to be observed by the mentors and subject incharges and a close tab is going to be kept on all the activities taking place in the school so that under the constructive guidance of the mentors and subject incharges, the teachers will get to work more efficiently and the students will get the best education possible.

There was also an orientation program for the students of std. IX and X on 12th of March because children nowadays tend to get distracted due to modern ways of living. Our principal Sr. Flora makes sure that they are not lost in the tinsel glamour of this world and from time to time she organizes such programs to make sure that their energies are channelized in the right direction.

Election for the school cabinet was conducted successfully on 21st of March and the results were declared on the same day. Rahul Dev Boipoi is elected as the school captain and Mahima pan as vice-captain. Alice Laguri is elected as the sports captain and Param Nilesh Tamsoy is elected as the vice-captain of sports. House captains and club captains were also elected and the investiture ceremony took place on 23rd of March.

Jeevan Jyoti, Telco: JMJ, at Telco, rejoiced thanking the Lord, on the great occasion of the proclamation of Dr. Sr. Mary Glowry as the SERVANT OF GOD, on 27^th March, 2013 by his lordship Rev. Dr. Gali Bali, the Bishop of Guntur. Dr. Sr. Mary was an Austrelian belonging to the Congregation of Jesus Mary and Joseph, came to India in 1920 and worked tirelessly in the medical field in Andra Pradesh.

Fr. Henry Sequeira was admitted in the ICU at Mercy Hospital with hypertension, uncontrolled diabetics and swelling of body.

Fr. James Quadros underwent a minor surgery for lipoma (extra growth at the back of his neck) and discharged same day.

Fr. Oscar Beck was admitted with parotid tumer. He was operated by Dr. G.K. Chaudhary. Surgery took for three hours. He recovered fast and was discharged and called to OPD for stitch removal.

Fr. Michael Jojo was admitted to St. Angela’s Hospital for the treatment of Malaria. He was well taken care and came back to his parish, completely healed.

POPE RENOUNCES PAPAL THRONE

Vatican City, 11 February 2013: The Holy Father, at the end of day's consistory for causes for canonization, announced his resignation from ministry as Bishop of Rome to the College of Cardinals. Following is the Holy Father's complete declaration, which he read in Latin: "I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is."

My dear Brothers and Sisters,

One hundred and seventeen (117) bishops of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), gathered at the Shrine of Our Lady of Health, Vailankanni, Feb 5-10, 2013 for the XXV Plenary Assembly and to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the Conference. The main topic of our deliberations was the “Pastoral Plan for the Church in India”, considered as a milestone in the onward journey of the Conference. Several ecclesial events made our Plenary Assembly more meaningful: - the Promulgation of the Year of Faith by Pope Benedict XVI on the Golden Jubilee of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council and the 20^th Anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), as also the Golden Jubilee of the declaration of the Shrine of Our Lady of Health at Veilankanni as a minor Basilica.

In the final Message to the faithful in India the Bishops said, “We fervently pray that all sections of the People of God be filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit and walk in newness of life. We appeal to you, lay people, to be conscious of the dignity of your lay vocation and never forget your call to be witnesses to Christ in an increasingly secularized world of today. We appeal to you, beloved children, to open your hearts always to Jesus Christ our loving Saviour who blesses children, and wants everyone to be childlike. We appeal to you, young people, to make Jesus Christ your Friend, and know that he is the answer to your life-questions. We appeal to you, men and women in consecrated life, to never diminish in zeal for the Kingdom of God and loyalty to the Church. GAUDALUPE CHURCH, TELCO: SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

With the initiative of Fr. Leo D’Souza, a day was celebrated in honor of senior citizens of the parish in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Telco. To thank and glorify the Lord Holy Eucharist was celebrated with all the parishioners. The prayers of thanksgiving were offered to God for their selfless services and exemplary life in the parish.  This was the occasion to show spiritual solidarity with all the senior citizen throughout the world. Fr. Emile Coelho was the Chief guest who presided over the Mass. Fr. Dincher and Fr. Manu Parapuram were present to grace the occasion. Rita and Betty (Canadians) who are at Vianney Niwas with the candidates were the guests of honor. The parishioners organized some entertainment programmes to cheer the hearts of senior citizens. At the end of the programme all present shared a delicious meal. Thanks to Frs. Benedict and Leo for their love and concern that they have shown towards them.

GOLMURI : ST. JOSEPH’S CATHEDRAL

Priestly Ordination: The Salesian province of Guahati was blessed by another young energetic priest Fr. Pradeep Ekka SDB who was ordained by Bishop Felix Toppo, S.J. on Sunday the 3^rd February, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Golmuri. His vice provincial and rector along with some of his guests from Belgium were present to grace the occasion. The Ordination ceremony was coloured by varieties of liturgical dances and meaningful singing during the Holy Eucharist. At the end of the Mass all present on the occasion congratulated and wish new life to the Newly Ordained priest, and gave honour to the Bishop, guest priests, religious and faithful for inspiring and guiding Fr. Pradeep Ekka in his priestly vocation.

The Parish Priest, Fr. Camille Hembrom gave the vote of thanks and welcomed all to share the joy with snacks and tea. The parishioners and relatives joined together in the traditional rhythmic dance. The companions of Fr. Pradeep from Belgium also joined with cheerful dancing crowed.

Retreats: For a better preparation of the lent a retreat was held at Gyandeep and Mercy chapel from 15th to 17 and 22nd to 24th Feb. Many people benefited from this renewal program.

SUNDERNAGAR : PREISTS RETREAT

In preparation for the joyful celebration of Easter, a five days retreat (18-22 February) for priests was organized at Catholic Charities, Sundernagar. Fr. Anil Dev, IMS a renowned retreat preacher from Matri Dham, Varanasi guided the priests with his inspiring talks which helped the priests to meditate and spend the fruitful time with the Lord. He encouraged them to be united with Vine to bear the fruits. 24 priests from the diocese participated in this retreat and profited from it.

BURIGORA :

Every village in Burigora mission got the chance to spend a day in recollection as a part of Year of Faith and lent activities. The faithful of the village had the opportunity for the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation and Eucharist. To show solidarity with the devout of Saraswati Mata on 16^th February, 2013 quiz, singing and dance competition was organized. Many people participated and enjoyed the programme. Congratulation to Fr. Sanjay Kujur and group!

KUMADUBI, TALDANGA : LOYOLA SCHOOL

While the 2013 ISC & ICSE batch students were busy with their MOCK tests and preparation for the finals the rest of the school was drowned in a patriotic fervor.  This year the REPUBLIC DAY has gone down in records with the performance of the children in the tableau. The theme was ‘WOMAN’. The great women leaders in various fields were shown and then female infanticide – dowry – eve teasing depicted the darker side of the society. But finally the mother image of the country and how and why we all must respect and honour her was the final sentence that was driven into the minds of all.

The serious mood continued as the ISC exam is postponed this year. As the month of February set in the boards and the annual exams began. (Rita Sen)

BISTUPUR : ST.MARY’S ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL

St. Mary’s English school had its sports day on the 12^th of January 2013.The chief guest was Mr. Charles Borromeo & the guest of honor was Fr. Augustine Ezhakunnel. Both of them appreciated & applauded the students for their fantastic performance .On the 30^th of January we had the Graduation night for the outgoing students of std. XII. The chief guest was Mrs. Nerurkar, she enlightened the students to dream high in order to succeed in life. It was very solemn & prayerful ceremony afterwards we had delicious dinner everyone enjoyed it. On 9^th February the school bid adieu to Mr. Peterlake & Miss Rajendra somlok. The management, staff & the students acknowledged & appreciated their contribution to St. Mary’s family. On 11^th &12^th of February we had the orientation given by the former Provincial of Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes Sr. Euphrasia. She gave lot of insight to the teachers with regard to class room management as well as positive self esteem. All the teachers were enriched energized & sharpened their self image in order to become an effective teacher. Thanks to Fr. MANGO : ST. JOSEPH'S COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The construction works on the college building is going on and hope to finish it very soon. Our 4th batch students are all in Mercy Hospital for their internship, all the students are happy with the practical training they are getting in the hospital. The Sisters as well as the nurses are very kind and helpful to the students in every way possible. We are very grateful to Mercy Hospital Sisters especially Sr. Elsy Joseph - Nursing Superintendent and to Sr. Jessy - Hospital Administrator for their support and collaboration.

Forms are being given out for the next batch; those interested may please come to the College office on week days (Monday to Friday) from 9 am to 5 pm. At the moment we are conducting only two courses. Diploma/Certificate course in Health Assistant (DHA/CHA) and Diploma, in Desk Top Publishing (DTP).

This is a one year programme. In Health Assistant course the basics of nursing are taught, students learn all the nursing procedures and are able to assist the nurses in the hospitals or clinics. In DTP the students learn the basics of Computers and Windows, Page Maker, Corel Draw, Photo Shop. These arc the core subjects but besides these we also teach them Conversational English, Life coping skills, Communications Skills, Basic Computer and Yoga. The students learn not just a trade but also to be a useful citizen.

Our humble request to all the parish priests, please help us to help your parishioners especially those who are not able to go ahead with their studies for some reason or another to come and join St. Joseph's Community College and we will help them to learn one trade and make themselves useful. MANGO : UPASANA / JESU BHAWAN

Fr. Dick McHugh, S.J. along with Fr. Giorgio Mennini, S.J. guided 29 participants for the NLP (Basic) which concluded on the 6 Feb . Fr. Benedict Minj, Parish Priest, Telco, participated and profited from the course along with 28 other participants. Later on the 9^th of February, 14 participants joined for the NLP (Advance) Course which concluded on the 19^th of February. They all were very happy with their stay and food arrangements as well as the course content wherein the sessions were intensely demanding and practical skill development oriented. Many were happy with the Self discovery, Self Confidence, Freedom experienced, along with the practical skills, help and support they received from the mentors, Fathers Dick and Giorgio. They enjoyed the green ambience of Upasana and Jesu Bhawan Campus. Fr. Jerry Kujur, helped by Br.Tony and the Novitiate team, made sure that all left happy. On the 23^rdof February, 9 Diocesan Regents joined 8 Jesuit Regents, for their monthly recollection, in Upasana. They were guided by Fr. Cyril Tigga, Director, Divya Bharati, Chaibasa. Fr. Rajesh is helping the Novices for the Lenten Ministry in various parishes of the Diocese and Jesuit Province during the coming month. (Fr. George Anthony, S.J.)

CRI: A BRIEF REPORT OF CRI CONVENTION

 The CRI Annual Convention was held at Jan Vikas Kendra, Sundernagar, Jamshedpur on 9^th and 10^th of February, 2013. The theme of the convention was “Profession of Faith in the context of the multi-cultural and social situations in our Diocese of Jamshedpur”. The resource person was Fr. Francis Kurien, S.J. Provincial, Hazaribagh Jesuit Province. The total number of participants was 84. The key note address was delivered by Fr. Mike T. Raj, S.J. Provincial and Regional CRI President encouraged   the congregation to look at our innovation as creative fidelity which is a call for dying to oneself and rising again. We need to look into the way we live our community life. Fr Mike further emphasized that if we want practice creative fidelity to our vocation we have to shake off the inertia of upper middle class comfort and strongly come to terms with raw reality of poverty and human right violations. Our mission must shape our life style. Mission ought to shape our religious life, not our religious life to shape our mission. Today we would rather look for a mission which suits our convenient conviction and our comfort zone. He challenged each one with a reflective question “Is there a desire to shape one’s life according to the need of the mission?” A big question to ask all of us religious.

Soon after the key note address, the reports of three Deaneries of Chaibasa, Dhanbad/Purulia and Jamshedpur were read out by the respective secretaries chaired by Fr Sunny Jacob S.J. The session on follow up action taken was chaired by Fr. Hilary Lobo, S.J. the CRI President who drew the attention of the audience to three major areas for action plans decided by last year’s convention were 1) Learning the local language 2) Faith formation in schools and colleges 3) Training in Mass Media. Except for the third one, the other suggestions were implemented at the Deanery level.

The second day, 10^th February saw Fr. Kurien’s vibrant and enriching power point presentation on the theme of the conference: the profession of faith in the multi-religious and social context of Jamshedpur. After painting a detailed account of multi-ethnic groups, Fr. Kurien went straight into the theme of convention and the identity of the religious in the Church especially the CRI. Our profession of faith, he stressed, should be a commitment to the Church inspired by the experience of personal prayer and action, celebration and reflection of doctrinal theology. The questions raised by him were very reflective and pin-pointed: What according to you is the specific role of the CRI, as distinct from the role of Religious in the Church? What specific contribution can CRI offer to the Church of Jamshedpur? (Distinct from the contributions already being made by individual Religious Congregations).

After some clarifications regarding his presentation, Fr Kurien chaired the session for action plan to be taken in this year of faith. He conducted a fruitful discussion about the identity of CRI and how we can ‘get out of our box’ and work collectively as a group for church in Jamshedpur. A youth commission of Sr. Gracy, SCN, Sr. Heleena JMJ and Fr Jotin, OP was formed to work with Fr. Emile Coelho, S.J. who is already involved in the ministry of unorganized university students.

In the business  session, the annual accounts was presented by Sr. Elsy Cherian, SCJM, Treasurer  and dates for the next year’s convention was fixed for 8th and 9th February 2014.  The format of CRI directory was handed out to collect the statistics of each community. After the Holy Eucharist presided by Fr. Kurien and  the sumptuous meal served by Fr. Halan Bodra and his team, the delegates left with true determination and motivation as a CRI Unit for the service of the Church in Jamshedpur.

CHAIBASA : ST. XAVIER’S ENGLISH SCHOOL

The school reopened on 2^nd of January, 2013 after the winter break. We had a small prayer seeking god’s blessing on everything that we have planned for this year.

Pre-board results were distributed on 11^th of January. A hearty farewell was given to the students of std X on 19^th of January. The students of std IX presented some cultural programs. It was a heart rending moment for students as well as teachers as teary-eyed students recounted some wonderful moments experienced in this school, some of them lightened the mood by sharing some hilarious moments.

Parents’– teachers meets were held for different classes on different days to discuss the problems faced by the parents and teachers while dealing with the children. Parents were also informed about the new syllabus and new fee-structure.

The founder of our school Fr. Cyril Fernandes visited Chaibasa on 24^th of January. We had been preparing for a science exhibition for a while and we timed it on 25^th of January so that Fr. Cyril could be present for its inauguration. True to expectation he managed to spare some time from his busy schedule and graced the occasion by being present as our chief guest. The principal of S.P.G Boys school, Chaibasa, Mr. Purushottam Sharma and the Professor of physics, Tata College, Chaibasa, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Gorai judged the projects exhibited by our students. Presence of such luminaries greatly influenced our young scientists. The judges appreciated their projects and acknowledged their talent and hard work. Such acknowledgements mean a lot to their budding talents.

We had a grand celebration on the occasion of Republic Day on 26^th January. Students performed colourful dances, skit and songs. During the program Fr. Cyril released the school magazine “ARTIFEX” (Creativity) the second Epoch. It’s a collection of creative ideas bursting forth from our talented students minds. This school was Fr. Cyril’s dream child and it was a moment of pride for him to see the school standing tall and its students growing in stature in every sphere, he delivered a small speech on the occasion which was quite touching and inspiring. All the students lapsed into a kind of trance as he spoke about the humble beginning of our school and about the time when he was oscillating between hope and despair to complete his dream project of building this school, to keep it from coming to a standstill. Through his speech he succeeded in conveying the message that all the good in our life comes from god. Both the power to do good, and the will to do it have a divine source. His philanthropic work that he did in India and the things he is doing in America has motivated our students to think beyond the words I and mine. They have been inspired to love others, less privileged ones.

From 4^th of February to 7^th of February we had teachers’ seminar in our school. Various methods of teaching were discussed. Tips were given for better management of classes.

Annual exams commenced on 9^th of February and ended on 23^rd of February. Thus our session 2012-13 has come to an end and we are gearing up for the new session 2013-14.    

 CHAIBASA : DIVYA BHARATI

A Two Days training program for catechists and lay leaders was organized on February 6 and 7, 2013.  35 participants from 12 parishes including Sisters and brothers prepared themselves to preach Lenten retreat in the Year of Faith in their respective areas. Thanks to all the Parish Priests who sent their leaders for the program. Resource persons- Fr Edwin Coelho, Dean, Fr. Kishore Lugun and Fr. Jerry shared their insights which were appreciated very much by all the participants.
